Suffolk Liberal Democrats want us all to be good eggs!12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 30th Jul 2009 The Suffolk County Council Liberal Democrats are urging all councils, public sector bodies, charities and businesses in Suffolk, to switch to using only cage-free eggs. The Compassion in World Farming organisation launched the 'Good Egg Awards' in 2007, with the aim of recognising the commitment of organisations to using only cage-free eggs. Using cage-free eggs ensures that hens do not suffer, and are able to partake in a normal life. It also benefits the environment and farmers. Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Finance and Resources Andrew Cann said, "We know that Suffolk County Council already uses Free-Range eggs in school catering for example. We call on all Suffolk councils, public-sector bodies, charities and businesses to switch to cage-free eggs and free more hens. "People in this county are very concerned about the quality of their food and animal welfare. Liberal Democrats believe that Suffolk can lead the way in not only 'greening' our county but also 'greening' our food with the added benefit of improving both the quality of food and the quality of life for chickens. We fully endorse Compassion in World Farming's 'Good Egg' campaign." Liberal Democrat Group Leader and Health Spokesperson Kathy Pollard said, "The 'good eggs campaign' is important as it highlights the steps that businesses can take to ensure that the produce they are buying and serving to staff or customers comes from chickens that have been given the right to live a full life."
