The Liberal Democrats are today cautiously optimistic at the news that the Highways agency are conducting a study into possible safety improvements on the A12 between Stratford St. Mary and East Bergholt.

Liberal Democrat councillors have been putting pressure on the Highways Agency to take action for a number of years. Kathy Pollard Liberal Democrat Group Leader said "We have been pressurising the Highways Agency to address this problem for a long time. This stretch of road has been host to some horrific accidents over the years, including the fatal accident last year involving a motorcyclist. Hopefully the results of this study will reduce the all too frequent accidents here."

Sue Carpendale the District Councillor for Holton and Stratford St. Mary added "I'm pleased to see that the Highways Agency has responded to our calls for safety improvements at long last. They are looking at enforcement of the 70mph limit, closure of the B1068 Higham turning and a possible introduction of a 50mph limit. The results of the study will be available in May."
