Liberal Democrats launch anti-incinerator petition and continue call for public inquiry

July 10, 2009 12:00 AM

The Liberal Democrats have launched an online petition against the proposed incinerator in Suffolk. The Group has taken a stand against the County Councils preferred option of a waste burning incinerator to dispose of not only Suffolk's waste, but we assume London's as well as this is in the waste plan.

The petition has launched on the SCC Liberal Democrats website at http://suffolkcclibdems.org.uk , as well as their newly created blog http://no2incineration.wordpress.com/. The Lib Dems will use the blog to provide updates on the potential incinerators, and what their preferred options would be.

Cllr for Gipping Valley, and Environment spokesperson John Field said, "The County Council has not given the public a chance to respond on the proposed incinerator. By providing a petition we will give the public the opportunity to show the strength of opposition and show the administration that they must address this problem.

Building a waste incinerator puts the Greenest County in jeopardy, causes environmental damage, and risks human health. These are extremely important issues that the public will need to discuss. A public inquiry is the only way that views on the incinerator sites will be received fairly."

Group Leader Cllr Kathy Pollard said, "The Liberal Democrats feel that a public inquiry must take place. Remembering what has already happened in this process shows us that the Conservatives are reluctant to run an open and fair consultation.

We know that the Conservative run County council prefer incineration as their technology of choice; this is without consulting the public on what they believe is the best option! Signing our petition will strengthen the case to prevent an incinerator being built. We are still waiting for decisions on sites for commercial and industrial waste incinerators in Suffolk."
