Liberal Democrats have highlighted the need for an early warning system to let the public and health scrutiny councillors know when services are likely to be moved from Suffolk hospitals to other locations.
Commenting on the issue Kathy Pollard Lib Dem Group Leader and Health Spokesperson, said "There is clearly huge public concern about the future of Ipswich Hospital. We must ensure that we are made aware of any significant change to care for Suffolk residents.
In the case of heart attack provision, we support the need to look very carefully at travel times to the three designated centres in Cambridge, Norwich and Basildon, especially from the Suffolk Coastal Area. This is particularly the case during the winter period, as the long hours of darkness increases the difficulty of transportation by air ambulance.
There are also major questions to be asked about why this issue was not picked up earlier within the county council. We will be pressing for better support to health scrutiny members which will include examining papers to the regional chairs forum. We must ensure that Suffolk residents have the best care possible as close to home as possible. Securing excellent services at Ipswich Hospital forms a vital part of that strategy."
