Councillor Kathy Pollard has warned that there will be long tailbacks on the Northbound A12 if the Highways Agency's current proposals for the Copdock Mill roundabout go ahead. Mrs Pollard, who is the Lib Dem councillor for the area, has called on the Highways Agency to reconsider this part of the proposed improvement scheme.
Mrs Pollard commented "The current plans are to move traffic travelling North on the A12 towards Ipswich into the right hand lane. At present Ipswich bound traffic travels in the left hand lane. The left lane always moves faster, and it is the outside lane which tends to have the longer and slower moving queue. The proposed change will cause major tailbacks and a great deal of lane switching as people try to bypass the queues in the outside lane.
I cannot understand the logic behind this change and I am asking the Highways Agency to alter this detail of the proposed scheme. I am worried that these "improvements" will cause more traffic to divert through local villages to avoid queues at Copdock Mill."
She added "It has taken a long time to get the information on the proposals. Whilst I welcome any improvements which will reduce congestion at this junction, it would have been far better if the Highways Agency had carried out some consultation in advance. If I hadn't asked to see what was proposed it would have been too late to do anything about it."
The Copdock Mill scheme is being funded by Hutchison Ports and includes full signalisation of the roundabout, as well as an extended off slip onto the A14 from the A1214.
