Liberal Democrats call for A14 safety improvements

April 16, 2009 12:00 AM

A leading Liberal Democrat and veteran road safety campaigner has called on the Highways Agency to declare if it has any plans to reduce accidents on the A14 trunk road following another fatal accident on the road on Easter Monday.

Leader of Suffolk County Council Liberal Democrats and Deputy Chair of the East of England Regional Assembly, Kathy Pollard said "If the Highways Agency have any plans to improve safety on this stretch of the A14 they are a well guarded secret. I would also question the way they failed to manage the tailbacks on Monday. Diversions were not set up far enough back on the A14.

My daughter and her partner passed the Higham junction at around 5.45pm on Monday - more than 3 hours after the accident - and were then caught in the tailback. It took them three and a half hours to travel two miles to the next junction, where they turned off. It was 9.15pm by this time and the road was still not clear, nearly 7 hours after this tragic accident. Given the length of time that police now have to close roads after fatal accidents, procedures should be put in place to manage traffic."

She added "There are far too many accidents on this road and the safety of all travellers must be prioritised. The average speed cameras on the section of A14 towards Huntingdon has made a major difference to the number of accidents on that section. Surely we need these now in Suffolk and on the busy section around Cambridge?"
