Liberal Democrats call for action after recent spate of accidents on A12 at Stratford St. Mary and East Bergholt

March 17, 2009 12:00 AM

Liberal Democrats are calling on the Highways Agency to take action after further accidents on the A12 South of Ipswich caused delays last week.

Councillor Sue Carpendale, a long time campaigner for A12 safety improvements commented "Nearly every week there seem to be one or more accidents on the A12 between Stratford St. Mary and East Bergholt. As District councillor for Stratford and Holton St. Mary I have been concerned for a long time about the interaction between increasing volumes of traffic on the A12 and the dangerously short slip roads along this section of road. It is essential that the £120 million earmarked for improvements to the A12 includes measures to make this road safer."

County Councillor Kathy Pollard added "Two years ago I met with the Highways Agency, who promised to look into the safety issues on this stretch of the A12, but I have heard nothing from them since. I have also written to the Regional Assembly to ask them to ensure that the money that is due to be spent on improvements to the A12 includes the busy Suffolk section of the road. There are far too many accidents here and we will continue to put pressure on the Highways Agency to take action. I am disappointed that they don't engage with local councillors and tell them what actions they are proposing to take."
