Liberal Democrats on Suffolk County Council have condemned the decision of the Conservative Administration to push back the target of a 60% recycling and composting rate for Suffolk from 2010 to 2015.
The target of 60%, set under the Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy (JMWMS) of the Suffolk Waste Partnership, was originally to be achieved by 2010. In early December however the Conservative Cabinet received a report 'reviewing' the current waste policies in the Strategy in which the 2010 target was pushed back to 2015.
Recycling rates have been steadily increasing over the past 10 years and the target of 60% looked very possible by 2010. Alongside this the total amount of waste going to landfill has been increasing too, making the need to recycle ever more important. (See notes 1 and 2, recycling rates and total waste arising figures.)
Speaking about the failure to meet the target, Cllr David Wood, Environment Spokesperson for the Libdems on the County Council, said, "The Administration spends a considerable amount of energy telling us all how big a problem waste is and using that as the reason why we need their incinerator. It is unbelievable that they are failing to meet their own targets on recycling. We have always been suspicious of this argument for an incinerator and it is one of the reasons why we opposed the idea.
They just seem to be creating problems for themselves. By failing to meet this target more waste will be going to landfill, which in turn costs them more money, more of our money as taxpayers. The need to make and stick to recycling targets cannot be overemphasised. I'd encourage everyone to try and do their bit to reduce what we throw away, and ultimately it benefits us all in the end."
